Preventive services such as blood pressure tests and cancer screenings are critical to identify diseases in their early states. Basic tests such as blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol checks, many cancer screenings, routine vaccinations, prenatal care and regular wellness checkups for infants and children. The focus on preventive care represents a fundamental shift in how health organizations are combating chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

These chronic diseases are responsible for seven out of 10 deaths each year and account for 75 percent of the nation's health-care spending. The shift from covering only sick care to covering wellness services is right around the corner with health care reform. Chronic diseases are often preventable and the impact that a focus on well-care will yield is encouraging to the health of all Coloradans.
